Recently I had an instance where “an acquaintance did not follow through on something they said they would do”. I thought “he was being rude and unkind and sort of an asshole” and at that moment, I felt “disrespected and hurt”.
I shut down, and was ruminating about the incident. Although it was the end of the evening, it put a damper on the short remaining time for me.
We do this often, right? Take something someone said and make it mean so much. We make it all so dramatic. We take each other’s words and it all seems so serious.
Why? Why do you think we do this?
The reality, however, when you begin to delve into thought work, is another cannot ever disrespect or hurt you. Another’s words do not have any power over you. This is because another’s words have EVERYTHING to do with THEM. Their words have ZERO to do with you. Did you know this?
Think of all the times you felt hurt, unloved. misunderstood, and even verbally abused. At that moment, our world can feel so off balance.
What I’m here to teach you is that another’s words cannot make you feel anything. It is ALWAYS your thought about their words that drives how you feel. So, when you think a thought, that thought drives your feeling. Get it?
What’s so wonderful is you actually can choose the thoughts you think. Did you know this? Another’s words have as much meaning as you put to them. The thoughts you think about their words make up the meaning. Choosing wisely can be the difference between a negative or positive experience.
Once I did my thought work regarding the incident I experienced, I realized yes, “this acquaintance did a thing”. AND my NEW thought was “perhaps he forgot and got confused”. With that thought, I felt “Understanding”. What a different experience I could have had that night! No harm, no foul, and now I have even more in my toolbelt!!!
It’s a skill. A sort of superpower actually. I can teach you. It’s super fascinating and brilliant and is key to living our human experience fully.
